Institute of Islamic Banking (IIB), UMT, Lahore holds the

4thGlobal Forum on Islamic Economics, Finance and Banking (IEFB), 2019

Institute of Islamic Banking (IIB) of University of Management and Technology (UMT) Lahore, organized the 4th Global Forum 2019 on Islamic Economics, Finance and Banking on February 27-28, 2019 at University of Management and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan. The theme of the Forum was “Islamic Economics, Banking And Finance Towards The Socio-Economic Wellbeing: Where Do We Stand?”.This was a flagship event of UMT and it turned out into a mega event by successfully engaging the world-renowned economist, scholars, intellectuals and students of the field in variable healthy debates and discussions.The researchersshared their original research and innovative ideas on the development of Islamic Economics & Finance.

The Chief Guest of the Forum was Mr. Ghulam Muhammad Abbasi (Director IBD, State Bank of Pakistan) whereas Dr. Muhammad Aslam (Rector UMT), Mr. Abid H.K Sherwani (D.G UMT) and Justice (R) Khalil urRehman Khan (Chairman PHDA) were the guests of the Honour.

The Global Forum was inaugurated with the welcome note and conference brief by the Dean IIB Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Kalim. She warmly welcomed all the honorable international\national guests and presenterswho travelled all the way from different placesto attend this conference and graced the occasion with their presence.

The Rector UMT, Dr. Muhammad Aslam welcomed the honorable chief guest, guest speakers and participants to the conference. He appreciated the efforts put in by UMT’s Institute of Islamic Banking for organizing this conference. He stated that this forum brought together Islamic Finance scholars, eminent researchers, Islamic banking experts and Islamic Finance students to discuss Institutional reforms for the development of Islamic Economics and Finance.

Keynote speech was delivered by Dr. Yahia Abdul-Rahman(Chairman and CEO, LARIBA Bank of Whittier, USA). He talked about the struggle, successes, challenges and risks involved in Islamic Banking with particular reference to USA. The honorable chief guest of the conference, Mr. Ghulam Muhammad Abbasi(Director IBD, State Bank of Pakistan) appreciated the efforts made by the Islamic scholars, Islamic Institutions and researchers in the development of Islamic economics, finance and banking. He also congratulated the managing team of the conference on organizing this successful event.


Six penal discussions titled, Practices of Islamic Banking: A Practitioners’ Perspective, Development in Islamic Finance: An SMEs Perspective, Growth in Halal Industries of Pakistan: Prospects and Challenges, Islamic Microfinance, a Catalyst for Job Creation?, Digital Banking, Mobile Banking, Fintech and Crypto-Currency: A Cybercrime’ Perspective and Religious and Modern Educational Institutions’ Role in the Development of Islamic Finance, were conducted during this two days event.Around 65 research papers were presented in ten parallel sessions on different sub themesand more thanthree hundred participants attended the event.


In the closing session of the Forum, there wasa keynote speech delivered byDr. Ai Kawamura(Assistant Professor, Faculty of Business Sciences. University of Tsukuba, Japan).The Guest of Honour, Mr.Abid H.K Sherwani(D.G UMT) gave his concluding remarks. The honorable guests gave their valuable closing remarksone by one. They all appreciated the efforts put in by the whole organizing team of Global Forum 2019 and congratulated them for arranging this successful mega academic event. The event was concluded by the vote of thanks and concluding remarks by the Conference Chair, Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Kalim and the Conference Convener, Dr. Hassan Shakeel Shah.
